Mamluk - Book Release

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing, eBook Marketing and tagged with Self-Publishing, marketing

 Mamluk – Emergence

terran chronicles universe blog It is the middle of 2016, and Team Terran have achieved another milestone. Mamluk is complete!

It was mid 2013 when Mamluk was first conceptualized, and then shelved as my focus shifted back to the Terran Chronicles Universe. This proved to be a great decision, as my brand continues to gain recognition thanks to the yearly release of a new novel in the series. Even though the writing of Mamluk was on hold, I was still able to discuss various elements and features with a handful of close friends, and make notes.

Read, Rate, and Review

Author Feedback and the importance of Reviews

terran chronicles universe blog Reviews are an integral, and often important, part of most people's purchasing decisions. In the past, we would ask friends and family for their opinions on various things. These days, with the explosion of the internet phenomenon, we are able to get the thoughts and opinions of more people, sometimes a lot more people.

Massive companies spend vast amounts of time, effort, and energy, in capturing these reviews, so as to inform their customers that not only do they think their products they are selling are great, so do thousands of others. Amazon is one of these companies, and their eBook Kindle program is world leading.

The World Did Not End

Making a Positive from a Negative

terran chronicles universe blog Well here we are; it's October 2015 and the world did not end last month as so many people had predicted.

The same can be said for indie authors, artists, musicians, and others who are deemed to be non-professionals in their hobbies or work. When a person posts a bad review of their work, the stars will still shine in the night sky, and the sun will still rise the next day. This also applies to work that is released, and then after the fact, mistakes are noticed or brought to their attention. The world will not end!

Alliance release - Are you ready?

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing, eBook Marketing, General and tagged with marketing

Terran Chronicles - Initiation Series

terran chronicles universe blog For this month's blog, I shall indulge myself, and talk about the Terran Chronicles Universe.

The fourth book of the Terran Chronicles Universe releases on August 5th. This is a global release, such is the power available at the hands of the meekest of authors. The eBook version of this story will be available on Amazon, iTunes, and Smashwords on this day. Nook, Kobo, and Flipkart, will follow shortly thereafter.

Alliance took more than two years to write, and is my most ambitious effort to date. Many of the questions raised in the earlier books are answered, while new ones are raised. A new race is tentatively introduced, with but the barest of hints as to their origins, and even less is revealed about their current whereabouts.

What follows is a brief overview of what has transpired, and of what is yet to come.

April is a special month to me

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Reviews & Ratings, Self Publishing, Routine and tagged with Self-Publishing, social media, Indie Authors

Reflecting in the month of April

terran chronicles universe blogThe month begins with a volley of 'April fool's' jokes. Some of these puns are extremely witty and well thought out, others not so much. But rest assured, between Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and all the other social media that exists, we will get to see many of these practical jokes get played out. I rarely create any April fool's hoaxes, but who knows what the future holds.

In the Southern Hemisphere, April marks the beginning of Autumn, or Fall as it is better known in America. Conversely, for the Northern Hemisphere, April marks the end of Winter, and return to warmer weather. I relish these warmer days as I get to ride my motorbike along the scenic roadways of Northern Michigan.

Embedded Marketing - Product Placement - Get Results with the Right Company

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing, eBook Marketing and tagged with marketing

You need the right team behind you.

terran chronicles universe blogProduct placement is the subtle, or sometimes not so subtle, inclusion of merchandise in a movie, photograph, or even in a book. An early example is in the novel, 'Around the World in Eighty days' where various transport companies made efforts to be mentioned.

Advertisers have constantly sought new and innovative ways to get the goods and services they represent in front of as many people as possible. While radio created some fresh prospects, the advent of television opened up a whole new medium. Advertisements began to appear before, and after, the shows played. It did not take long for advertising agencies to realize that other opportunities existed, thus embedded marketing was born. The latest movies are filled with numerous examples, ranging from the beer or soft drink that is being consumed, to objects which are in the background. When an actor opens up a laptop, the brand is often displayed, prior to the viewer seeing the movie related content on its screen.

Recap of Terran Chronicles 2014 and what’s coming for 2015

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing and tagged with Self-Publishing, Indie Authors

2014 was a great year for Team Terran

terran chronicles universe blogThe short stories, 'Jie's World' and 'Emma's Legacy', were completed and released. Emma's Legacy is the second of three special Journal style works; it offers an insight into events far in the future.

2014 saw a behind the scenes transition for the Apple/iTunes versions of my work. The major reason for going direct was to gain a greater control of my eBooks on the iTunes platform. We were successful. Release times have dropped from weeks, to days.

Another major initiative for 2014 has been the start of the conversion process to print versions of the Terran Chronicles Novels. We are using CreateSpace, an Amazon company, for these books. As a part of this process the main novels' associated short story is being included with each book.

Book One, 'First Contact', with 'Johnny's Jaunt', is now available in print.

An Indie Author's Experience of 'Going to Print'

terran chronicles universe blogMany authors want to see their books in print form. This used to mean sitting around and waiting for a publishing company to 'discover' their work. Along comes the digital age and with it, the time of the 'indie author'. Individuals suddenly gain the ability to self-publish their writings, which has seen a measurable drop in print book sales. But the days of books are far from over, and in keeping pace with this ever changing market, Amazon's CreateSpace allows indie authors to self-publish in print.

Firstly though, what is an indie author?

Using Current Events in Fiction Writing

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing and tagged with Indie Authors

Too close to home or do you weave reality

terran chronicles universe blogMany writers enjoy weaving a moral story inside their works of fiction and fantasy. Real world events can often be the catalyst for amazing storylines, and their subsequent consequences. Sometimes the message conveyed is subtle, and missed. Other times the meaning to clear and obvious. In either case, once discovered, the effect on the reader can be quite profound.

Science Fiction versus Fantasy

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing and tagged with Indie Authors

Just what is the difference between Fantasy and Science Fiction

terran chronicles universe blogI am sometimes asked what a science fiction novel is, and if it differs from fantasy. Well first, let's tackle their individual meanings.

Science fiction is content which is usually set in the future, or in futuristic settings. These stories usually involve space travel, scientific advancements, or alien races. A common theme of science fiction is an off world setting. Think of Frank Herbert's Dune saga, or Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

Fantasy writing usually involves mythical beasts, magic, and strange lands, which are often inhabited by stranger creatures. Some of the most famous fantasy lands include J.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, or J.K Rowling's, Harry Potter Series. A prolific author who was ahead of her time was Enid Blyton. She wrote numerous children's fantasy books, many of which I still recall to this day.

Computers that Writers and Gamers use

The technology of a writer (and avid Gamer)

terran chronicles universe blogThe only common denominator for my title is that I do both. In reality, the computer system that is essential for writing has rather simple needs, while a gaming system definitely requires far newer technology. I will add that having multiple monitors for both is a very handy feature.

We all have to start somewhere and with perseverance, we can make our dreams come true.

My Stepdaughter, Kayla, has been fascinated with cartoons for her entire life. When she said she wanted to be involved in the industry, her mother and I did what we could to support her endeavors.

She spent four years studying at the Chicago Institute of Art, then took the bold step of moving to New York in order to pursue her new career. During college, and these early days in New York, she had to work a variety of jobs in order to make ends meet.

Progress in the quest for an Editor for the Terran Chronicles Universe

terran chronicles universe blog

I began writing the Terran Chronicles Universe series in 2010, and have been tweaking my writing and publication process ever since. Many times I have talked about being an indie author, and having limited resources at my disposal. One of the defining factors that differentiates many indie authors from professionals is the quality of their editing.

James Jackon's Experience of Apple Publishing Directly to the iBookstore

terran chronicles universe blog

Just like many indie authors, I am constrained as to what I can do in terms of self publishing. My home computer I write on is a Windows based system, which means publishing directly to Apple is not possible because the Apple publishing process requires an Apple Computer.  However there are companies that will, for a nominal fee, publish to Apple

January 2nd is the claimed birthday of Isaac Asimov, a prolific and renowned science fiction writer. In my October 2013 blog, I paid homage to these greats, and others, for the inspiration they continually provide me.

Free ebooks and your marketing strategy.

This question not only plagues writers, but all artists, especially those who make a living from selling their creations.  When it comes to eBooks, there are quite a few opinions about 'giveaways' or 'free ebooks'. Some folks swear by the philosophy, stating that by giving away a whole pile of eBooks it can increase readership.

How do you fix a broken ebook writing routine?

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing, eBook Marketing and tagged with Indie Authors, writing routine

No quiet time and my thoughts are everywhere.  Where do you start?

terran chronicles universe blog

As far as writing goes I found myself falling into a pretty basic routine. I would get home from my day job, you know, the one that pays the bills, then cook a little something to eat. After relaxing in front of the TV, where I would usually watch an episode of one sci-fi show or another, and be mentally ready. This has been working for me for over two years now?

Taking a Break - Is it writers block or not?

Posted by James Jackson. This article was posted in Self Publishing, eBook Marketing and tagged with Indie Authors, Characters, writers block

A suddenly epiphany and I discovered my problem.

terran chronicles universe blog

Living in northern Michigan affords me a great opportunity to write during the cold snowy months. This last winter I could have written thousands upon thousands of words, but I did not. My word count went from around a thousand per day to mere hundreds. I had expected to convert my summer motor bike riding time into some serious writing time. So what happened?
